There are a few things in life that feel like heaven: a favorite food, a new house, and cuddles from a dog. Four-legged friends can make everything better in our lives. Unfortunately, dogs live very short lives compared to their owners.
After spending months at a dog rescue Gnocchi, an 11-year-old chihuahua, was losing hope that he would live out his senior years in the loving arms of his human.
The senior pup, who had been rescued from a hoarding home and missing all his teeth, was being disregarded by visitors to the shelter, and his spirit was slowly dying until 101-year-old Johanna decided to open her hands and her home to the new guy. Then the pair was in unconditional love in their senior years.
Simultaneously, 101-year-old California’s Johanna Carrington was grieving the death of her four-legged fur baby, Rocky who died months before her 101st birthday. His leaving wasn’t only a huge emptiness in her heart but also on her lap where he had usually sat.
“I missed him a lot, especially because he liked to rest on my lap.” “After Rocky’s death, the house seemed really empty, and my days were quite sad,” Carrington told the Washington Post. Carrington’s daughter, Debbie Carrington said that her mother’s mood had changed significantly with the losing 0f Rocky and wanted to make a laugh with a new furry buddy. On the other hand, Debbie was in a problem that she wouldn’t be able to care for the adorable creature due to Carrington’s elderly age.”
“My mother was 100 at the time, and we weren’t sure whether she could even have a dog at her age.” “I honestly wondered if anyone would allow it,” she said after being rejected by a rescue.
But then the mother and daughter discovered a wonderful place, Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, where aging canines may live out their days with dignity and a lot of love.
Just before her 101st birthday, the centenarian filed out an adoption application for an elderly dog and waited for a response from the senior’s refuge.
Carrington explained that she had a strong support system, including Debbie and her own caretaker, to help care for a new family friend.
“As long as my mom had a strong support team – and she does – we learned that she could adopt another dog,” Debbie Said. “Throughout the years, my mom has given a home to numerous canines, and we knew it would make a huge difference for her to have another one, even at 100.”
The perfect match
Alice Ensor, an adoption counselor at Muttville, evaluated her application and thought it was ordinary at first. Until she noticed Carrington’s age of 100.
“When I first received Johanna’s adoption questionnaire, I was a bit surprised,” Ensor told The Dodo. “Being 100 years old is a significant milestone in and of itself. We don’t often get a centenarian seeking a new mutt. Johanna had to be a special dog parent to be seeking for a new furry buddy ahead of her 101st birthday.”
Muttville staff hurried into action, looking to perfect match Carrington with the new pup.
Gnocchi, a toothless chihuahua rescued from a hoarding place where there were 22 dogs, was unwanted to anyone.
The cuddly white puppy was getting unhappy and giving up hope after spending months at the rescue.
He just wanted to spend his last days on the lap of a kindhearted human, and the adoption specialist trusted that Carrington was his human.
Love at first sight
Ensor stated that “it was love at first sight” when Carrington watched Gnocchi in a virtual call.
Gnocchi, now named Gucci, came into his new home in September 2022 and quickly filled the empty space on her lap by leaping on it.
“I’d never experienced before. “He just jumped on my lap and kissed me,” Carrington, now 102, recalls. “It was awesome. I’m sitting in a reclining chair because I am in a trouble with walking. He came up the stairwell, leaped on me, and began kissy kissy.”
Gucci is frequently seen on his mom’s lap, receiving back massages, when he is not out walking with Carrington’s caretaker or Debbie.
And, as his new name proposes, he’s also a fashionista.
“He stays warm because I have a sweater for him. He stares at me for a long time, I think he’s grateful that I make him warm,” Carrington said of her swaggy bestie.
Meanwhile, her daughter shared that “Gucci brought joy into the house” that was calm and quiet. “Laughing about him running around and doing funny things, and then also him sleeping on her lap with her while she’s in her recliner or sleeping in her bed, it’s just making her very happy,” Debbie said, adding that her mother is happy and healthy, proving the evidence that pets’ effects are positive on our overall well-being.
“She’s a lot happier, and she and Gucci have become best friends,” Debbie said, adding that if Gucci outlives her mother, she will adopt him. “Gucci is very gentle with her and always follows her around.” When she gets ready to sleep, he waits for her in the bathroom, then companions her to bed and snuggles in. Everyone can see there’s an amazing glue.”
“He brings me so much joy!” says Carrington. I am delighted with him come on my lap and join me. Gucci has given me someone to love and care for, which makes a gigantic difference at my age.”
